In the southernmost part of the state, Key West hosts the annual Fantasy Fest Beard & Mustache Contest, an eccentric and colorful event that emphasizes creativity and costume flair. Held at Willie’s Chicken Shack, this contest encourages participants to decorate their beards with outrageous themes, often inspired by the overall festival’s theme. Categories include natural beards, full beards with styled mustaches, fantasy beards, and Whiskerina (artificial beards for women). The event also incorporates online contest options, expanding participation beyond the physical venue. Judging, Preparation, and Community
Florida competitions generally follow judging standards recommended by the North American Competitive Beard & Moustache Alliance (NACBMA), emphasizing grooming, creativity, originality, and stage presence. Many contestants invest significant time using grooming products like specialized beard oils and waxes and may incorporate costumes or props to elevate their presentation. Beyond competitions, these events serve as social hubs for enthusiasts to connect, share tips, and celebrate individuality.
